Burne-Jones @ Winchester Cathedral

winchester 046

For some time now I have been travelling to Winchester but haven’t managed to visit the Cathedral. One of the reasons that I wanted to go is to see the Gormley sculpture “Sound II” in the crypt, which was closed today due to a funeral.

HOWEVER, what I didn’t know is that there is a small chapel off the main nave which has four stained glass windows, designed by Edward Burne-Jones and crafted in William Morris’s workshop, they are absolutely beautiful. The colours are so vivid and the foliage design throws a gorgeous green hue into the chapel.

My pictures do not do justice to the colours so please make the effort to go, the Cathedral is beautiful & these windows are the icing on the cake.

  1. Beautiful! I love the Pre-Raphaelites but did not know about these windows in the cathedral of my county town. Will have to go and take a look!

  6. Thanks for your beautiful photos. I love Burne-Jones and the other Pre-Raphs. In fact I'm hoping FC will be bringing me the new Burne-Jones biography for Christmas. We have a stained glass window in the building where I work. I was able to trace which company made it and in fact we have the cartoon for it in our archives. A fact most of us were unaware of. Sadly, not Burne-Jones, but we are still proud of it.
